POPULAR QUESTIONS

Get Answers to Your Questions

Whether you are completely new to horses looking to start your first lesson or a seasoned horse owner looking for your next barn, we got you covered!

What should I wear to my first riding lesson?

Wear long pants (like leggings or breeches), a fitted shirt, and closed-toe shoes with a small heel (boots are best). Avoid loose or flowy clothing that could get caught.

Do I need my own helmet?

Turning Point Farm provides helmets that meet ASTM/SEI certification standards, though students are encouraged to have their own professionally fitted helmets. Long pants and closed toed shoes or boots with a small heel are required.

Is horse riding safe?

Like any sport, it has risks, but proper instruction, safety gear, and calm school horses make it very safe for beginners.

How long is a lesson?

Most beginner lessons are around 30 to 60 minutes long, depending on your age and focus. Some may include grooming and tacking up before riding.

How often should I take lessons?

Once a week is typical for beginners. More frequent lessons can help you progress faster, but consistency is key either way.

Where are you located?

Turning Point Farm is a twenty acre farm located in Clarksburg, Maryland. It is conveniently located near Washington, D.C. and Frederick, Maryland, five miles from the Clarksburg outlets, and in the heart of Potomac Hunt country. Adjacent to Turning Point Farm are miles of trails. The property is fenced with four board white PVC, which provides picturesque scenery and safety throughout the farm. The tack room is designed with individual cubbies to ensure proper storage. Turning Point Farm also offers a feed room, hot/cold wash stall, heated/cooled lounge, and rubber matted stalls and aisles throughout the eighteen stall barn. The lit indoor and outdoor arenas provide riding in all weather conditions. A meandering creek and eight paddocks provide ample beauty and sanctuary for the horses.

The trainers, Susan and Melissa, are exceptional! The horses are kept in training & sensitive - so rider can really hone their commands and improve. I have a much better seat now and got the horse on the bit and collected.

I love having both a rubber footing outdoor and indoor. The horses are well cared for, with excellent stall management and plenty of turn out. I've owned before and this is how I would want my own horse to be cared for.

I loved my lessons with Susan as she helped get both of my horses straight and through, properly carrying the weight on their hind legs. She explains high level concepts clearly enough even for a beginner rider to understand!

All horses had plenty of turnout, were well groomed, had good weight on them, and seemed very relaxed. This level of care is surprisingly challenging to accomplish while keeping the property immaculately maintained!

My lessons with Melissa have been wonderful! Her feedback and attention to detail have helped me to improve tangibly with each lesson. For my lessons, I have been riding Skye; he's been trained so well and has been a pleasure to learn to ride on. I highly recommend Turning Point Farm, whatever level of rider you may be!
